Schumer calls for Azar to resign over ‘chaos’ in coronavirus response

“It has become abundantly clear that the leadership of the Department of Health and Human Services has allowed perhaps the most important federal agency right now to become subservient to the president’s daily whims,” Schumer said on the Senate floor. “So today, I am calling on Secretary Azar to resign immediately. We need a Secretary of Health and Human Services who will look out for the American people, not President Trump’s political interests.”

The call from Schumer comes amid a series of controversies at HHS.

On Monday, the New York Times reported that a top HHS official under Azar, Michael Caputo, accused government scientists of plotting against Trump and told supporters to buy ammunition. Politico also reported that Caputo and his communications team have sought to edit important scientific reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Trump has also put pressure on the Food and Drug Administration to move faster on approvals of treatments and vaccines, accusing the “deep state” at the agency of purposely slowing the process down.

Schumer argued that Azar has been quiet on these controversies and has not been standing up for scientists in his department.

“The Secretary of Health and Human Services, Alex Azar, has not only failed to push back against these outrageous moves by President Trump, he’s been almost entirely silent about the chaos and mismanagement in his own agency,” Schumer said.

Schumer is aiming for the top of the department, at a figure who oversees the department but whose name has not been directly involved in most of the controversies.

President Donald Trump and his challenger Joe Biden have fiercely clashed in one of the most chaotic and rancorous White House debates in years.

Amid angry shouting and name calling, the two fought over the pandemic, white supremacy and the economy during the 90-minute forum in Cleveland, Ohio.

Mr Biden called the president a “clown” and told him to “shut up”. Mr Trump brought up drug use by his rival’s son.

Opinion polls suggest Mr Biden has a steady single-digit lead over Mr Trump.

But with 35 days until election day, surveys from several important states show a closer contest.

The debate focused on six topics in 15-minute segments – the candidates’ records, the Supreme Court, the pandemic, race, election integrity and the economy.

LIVE: Trump Holds Campaign Rally in Duluth, Minnesota

Published

on

(Sept. 30) Watch live as President Donald Trump delivers remarks at a Make America Great Again campaign rally in Duluth, Minnesota, on Wednesday, September 30, 2020.

Trump and Democrat Joe Biden delivered conflicting messages targeting voters across the Midwest on Wednesday as the candidates, their allies and rank-and-file voters sought to move past the most chaotic presidential debate in memory.

The Tuesday night affair raised fresh questions about Trump’s continued reluctance to condemn white supremacy, his efforts to undermine the legitimacy of the election and his unwillingness to respect debate ground rules his campaign had agreed to. Some Democrats called on Biden to skip the next two debates.

Biden’s campaign confirmed he would participate in the subsequent meetings, however, as did Trump’s.
